I think I've tried every possible solution, and I'm at my wit's end. If I don't move anything to my external hard drive, then everything works as normal, but there isn't enough space on my internal hard drive, so it prompts the error that there's insufficient storage space available.
I re-open the launcher, and get the same error message. Ln -s /Volumes//Application\ Support/FINAL\ FANTASY\ XIV\ ONLINE /Users//Library/Application\ Support I move the ~/Library/Application Support/FINAL FANTASY XIV ONLINE folder to my external hard drive and create a working symlink to the folder in the Application Support folder. Ln -s /pathToYourExternalDriveFF14Folder /pathToWhereItUsedToBeOnYourInternalDrive Once that's done, copy the FF14 application support folder (just drag and drop) onto your external drive. Clear them all out and then test/cleanup your ideas one at a time. The next step should be to remove both of your symlinks before trying again, in case one of them will prevent this from working correctly. You have to move the folder to the external drive before linking it back.
So I think neither of your terminal commands were exactly correct. The symlink is where you want them to appear on your main drive. The 'original' is the original files that will live on your external drive. I have Finder set to display the remaining hard drive space on the bottom of open windows and when I'm in my symlinked FF14 folder this display switches to show the remaining space of my external drive. Once you have a symlink set up you can test it before installing. These are unpacked automatically onto the external drive after the chunk finishes downloading, and the temp files are removed
The game files are downloaded to a temp location somewhere on the main drive in 1.5GB chunks. Reopen the launcher, make sure it still works, and begin the 40GB download. (The Documents > My Games folder is tiny and doesn't matter). Find the newly created game data folder (yourMainSystemDrive > Users > yourUserName > Library > Application Support > FINAL FANTASY XIV ONLINE) and use symlinks to move it to an external drive. Open the launcher once to make sure it works, then close it without doing anything. I tried aliases as well and they didn't work. They're similar to folder aliases but more complicated and low-level.
